In 2000, the electric utilities of Black Earth and Mazomanie joined to form Vanguard Electric. Vanguard is its own entity, but is 100% funded by both villages. We have six employees--the superintendent, office manager, and four linemen--who share time between both villages. We perform all work pertaining to the construction and maintenance of power lines.
Black Earth serves about 1300 customers, and has almost 100 miles of rural line, which is very unique for a municipal utility. Mazomanie serves about 980 customers, and has a large number of industrial services with almost no rural territory.
Vanguard is governed by a Commission Board, which is comprised of members from each village board, as well as citizen representatives.
